AI Assistants Can Remember More Than You Intended

By Datante · Prepared

AI stands for artificial intelligence. Here, it means software that can answer questions or help with tasks.

An AI assistant may become more useful when you let it read your messages or calendar. But that also gives a service more information about your life.

Datante can reduce selected background tracking connections from devices using its settings. It cannot remove private details from a message you choose to send to an AI company. You need to check both your sharing choices and your home's connections.

What does AI memory mean?

Memory means saving details so an assistant can use them later. Asking one question is different from letting a tool keep learning about your schedule or read new messages.

An assistant may also make guesses about you. These guesses can form a profile: a collection of details or ideas about a person. A convincing guess is not necessarily true.

The Straits Times explored how chatbots can make personal guesses. Business Insider's report on Instinct described connected accounts and reported terms allowing use of user data for model training.

Training means using examples to improve how an AI system works. Different services have different rules. Read the current terms for the one you use.

Before connecting an account, decide what the assistant needs. Helping with an appointment may not require access to your entire inbox.

Which settings should you check?

Look for answers to these questions:

  • What can the assistant read?
  • What does it remember?
  • How long does the company keep your information?
  • Can people working for the company review your chats?
  • Can your chats be used to train AI?
  • What remains after you delete a conversation?

The time a company keeps information is called retention. Permission means the access you let an app have. A prompt is the message or question you send to an AI tool.

One setting may not control all of these things. Personal accounts and workplace accounts may have different rules.

Google's Gemini Privacy Hub explains its choices. It says temporary chats are not used to train Google's AI models. They can still be kept for a limited time for other reasons.

That is a rule for that product and chat mode. It does not tell you how every Google service handles every photo or recording.

Remove account connections and saved memories you no longer need, where the service lets you. Be careful with other people's private details too.

Can new research keep AI memory private?

Researchers are testing ways to remove or replace private details before sending them to online AI services.

One research project, MemPrivacy, studies replacing sensitive details with placeholders. A placeholder stands in for the original detail.

Its approach splits work between a local device and a cloud service. Local means on your own device. Cloud means on computers elsewhere, reached over the internet.

This is research. It does not mean every assistant uses it or that it catches every private detail.

Datante does not provide MemPrivacy or a tool that removes private details from prompts.

How does Datante help your home?

Your TV and other smart devices may contact advertising or tracking services in the background, apart from anything you send to an AI assistant.

DNS stands for Domain Name System. It helps devices find network addresses for service names. Those names are called domains.

When a device uses Datante, an enabled rule can block the usual lookup for a selected tracking name. That may stop a connection needing the answer. Datante's household reports show lookup and filtering decisions.

But an AI app might send both chat messages and other data through the same allowed domain. DNS filtering cannot reliably pick one part to block. Blocking the whole name may stop the app.

Datante also cannot read a protected AI message and remove a family member's name from it.

Use the AI service's settings for what you share with it. Use Datante to reduce selected tracking connections elsewhere in the home.

What should you do before linking an account?

  1. Choose the task you want help with.
  2. Give the assistant only the access it needs.
  3. Check memory, training, retention and chat-review rules.
  4. Remove old account links and saved details you do not need.
  5. Avoid sending passwords, unnecessary health or money details, or other people's private information.
  6. Review household activity separately. A DNS report is not a copy of your AI conversations.

Frequently asked questions

Will Datante stop an AI company training on my messages?

No. Use the company's settings and terms, or do not send the information. DNS filtering cannot decide what a company does with data it receives.

Can Datante delete a profile an assistant already made?

No. Use the service's deletion and account controls. Blocking future connections does not undo earlier use.

Can I block an AI app with Datante?

A custom domain rule may stop connections needing that lookup. It is not a guaranteed app lock. Shared or remembered addresses and other connection settings can limit it.
